Aspire One Software

Tiger – updated

Posted by: 2manydjs on: September 30, 2008

I’ve been looking for a Tiger install DVD for the Aspire One for a while as Leopard’s footprint is a bit too big for the One (6,9GB vs 4GB). Unfortunately the releases I tried (JaS, XxX, Kalyway, etc) didn’t boot.. Now finally I have found one! It’s a release of 10.4.5 and I’m installing as I type. I’ll update this post as soon as I get some results!

Here is a link to a site with more info on this release.

Update after the break

After booting into the system (which seemed quicker than Leopard on the AAO), I tried to install the RTGMac v 2.0.0 driver to get ethernet working. That turned out to be a bad idea, as it gave me kernel panics when booting. Even safe mode and single user mode didn’t work any more.

This release does not have the correct UVC driver and PS2 driver, which means webcam and touchpad and keyboard do not work correctly after install. These drivers should be copied from another release. I have tried the PS2controller.kext from another release and it works fine, you can download it here

The instructions for Leopard (described here) are not working in Tiger, so no audio, video and ethernet support for now.. :(

What’s not working (long list :) )

  • Ethernet
  • Webcam
  • Airport
  • Sound
  • Native resolution / QE / CI
  • Sleep
  • Card reader

Lot of work to do!
Apparently the Atom chip is correctly recognized!

I have tried the Jas 10.4.8 GMA 950 package, but it does not get recognized. Might be because the kernel is 10.4.5..

I have Leopard, maybe that would install well. After VISTA will give that a try and post for you the 1st results.

Or did you already tried that? I guess the updates in Leopard will be workeing better for the hardware in the AAO.

Anyhow great post on getting OS X working on the AAO!

Thanks I have tried Leopard as well. The reason I wanted to try Tiger is it’s smaller footprint resulting in a faster system and more storage space. Unfortunately there are even less compatible drivers for Tiger than for Leopard..

Looks nice! :-) By the way what is “Airport” mentioned in the “Not working” list ? What about the speed on this ? How does it run ? Is it worth trying ?

Hi GvidoR,

I have given up on this, mostly because newer kernels don’t seem to be working, but they are needed for the drivers. I would still love to have a full Tiger install on my AAO though!

BTW Airport is Apple’s name for WiFi

it would be really nice to have tiger running on the AAO, but the WiFi is a must!

I not using a oen WIFI , I am using one with my acer aspire 5630 , the cd have drivers for leopard and tiger ..
