Ron’s TinyXP image for Aspire One

Posted by: 2manydjs on: September 30, 2008

Please pay attention: there is currently only ONE version of Ron’s image: Rev09. Any reference to Rev02 is a typo. Please search this page with over 750 posts before asking anything: most likely you will find your answer..
Ron has created an image of his Tiny XP installation customized for the Acer Aspire One and includes all the specific drivers, fan control software and Office. Ron’s image and the necessary tools can be found at this torrent: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4670099/Ron_s_TinyXP_image_for_Aspire_One.

Install instructions are posted after the break, but are also included in the archive.

Password of the rar files is Ron[nl].

[update]

The megaupload link will soon expire. Ron has decided not to renew this link and feels that all issues about this image has been discussed in these comments before. I’m sure you can find the image through other resources on the internet! The comment section will stay open.

TinyXP for Acer Inspire One (100A/8GB SSD/1.536MB RAM) by Ron[nl]

See megaupload is tons better you get one link and 500-700KBPS easy…great post!

Password of the files is Ron[nl].

Thanks Ron, I forgot to mention that!

Does this image have EWF setup already or not?
(I’d prefer not)

I’m sorry, what’s EWF?

Hi Ron,

Forgive me for my ignorance, i’m not sure how to use megaupload password.. pls guide me.

Thanks in advance.

Thank You!

Thanks for this excellent image!

No EWF or BWFB Supported. It found it not neccesary because this install is speedy enough even with Kingstong Internet Security 9 installed and running all the time (180 free trial) :-P

And I’m happy to receive many positive responses for this image. I’m working on the same achievement for Vista, but due to time it takes longer than expected. I still believe XP is the way to go on the AAO (when not using Linux or OS X). The eye candy of Vista can be achieved on XP as well with free pakages like Vistamizer or good themes for XP.

But it’s a challenge to get VISTA running with good speed on a AAO with SSD..hehehehehe

Just installed, runs like a dream. you have to try this!!!! cheers Ron Very Very Please.

Thanks Wayne, glad I could point you to the right way of a happy XP user on AAO.

Can someone please reupload the file on Rapidshare?
I can’t download from Megaupload in my country :(

Does this image work on SSD drives only? or can it work on HDD? Is there a streamlined version of Vista available for HDD?

I used FAT32 on my 4GB usb flash disk instead of FAT. No problems. Installed perfectly!

Thanks

@Tord…Others also managed to install it on a hard drive.

Does this work on AA0-150-X?

Excellent Image… installed and works great…

But.. Outlook 2003 cannot send or receive emails on POP3 accounts…. anyone else had this problem?

Hi Ron this is an excellent image I have one problem though.
I’m unable to use my 3G modem as I get some strange errors, I searched the net and it seems I need modem support hope you can help.

Mark

“TINYXPAAO.GHO is broken.”

Is there a way to use a download manager with megaupload?
My internet connection has broken down 3 times and I had to restart the download. Been trying for a week now to get this file.

@BFin..You tried Windows Update? It should work fine with POP3 and MSN/Hotmail as well.

@Jack..most probably something went wrong with your download.

@mark…I answered your pm on the forum…maybe you can pm me your log with the errors and I will take a deeper look into that in a week or so.

@Stefan….I believe there is one from MU to download on their website. If you have a premium RS acount take the links given earlier.

CAN YOU ANSWER MY QUESTION?
Your question had been answered one comment above your original question.. If you think you’ll get far in live with this kind of attitude, you’ll be unpleasantly surprised. – 2manydjs

Hello Ron,

I noticed that you have a new version REV 09. Are you going to make a new image clone of your disk with this new version? I’m not sure if the rev 02 has the sp3 included in it, am I wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Ron,

One more question. If I install your rev02 image, do I still need to disable the various options, like paging, D2D, or prefetch, etc. or will the image do all these things automatically. If not, is it possible that you can give me some advice as to how to configure the settings, in your experience?

Thank you!
David

Hi. This sounds like exactly what I need for my Aspire One 512MB, buit perhaps I could ask two questions:

Does it include regional, keyboard and language setting for the UK?

and

Can it be installed from disc?

Many thanks,

Bert Coules

Installed successfully on A0A-110 :D
Very speedy!
Thanks a bunch!

Just a note. To install Arabic language i had to get a copy of windows sp3 extracted onto a USB flash drive. Which wasn’t any problem at all.

@David It does include SP3. I think all the tweaks you talk about are included, but maybe Ron can elaborate.

This is working great so, very fast. only issue is I can’t install newer wmp or msn both say i need to update update fails or says no updates.

Well forget that last post, fixed it already. Thank you Ron for this saves me from upgrading to a HDD for now.

@David..My instruction says TinyXP rev 02…BUT it is TinyXP Rev 09!!! When I wrote the instruction I was also working on TinyVista REV 02. Maybe 2ManyDJs can mention this in the article. So This is the latest version!

All the tweaks are done and included, no extra work needed. Except disabeling D2D is done in the bios not in XP. The only tweak I didn’t do because it seems speedy enough was the EWF or BWFB one.

@Bert
There is only the US keyboard included. But with windows update you can change that. Windows Update works also with the included FireFox…google for the Add-On FireFox for |Windows Update and you’re on your way!

Yes you can do it from disc as well. Burn the image to the disc, but you need a bootable disc for ghost as well. But all the tools are included in the download to do it from a 1GB usb stick!.

@Rami & al
Glad you managed as well and join the happy users :-) ….As mentioned earlier…just enable windows update in FireFox. It can always be handy to have the windows update at hand. image.

@ al…..FYI there is a driver available for the left SD driver that makes a SDHC card additional Hard disk space that works also in XP!

Ron,

Many thanks for the reply and info.

Bert

Cheers Ron!

Thanks for all the info!

David

Hi Ron,

About the SDHC additional HDD. Where can I find this driver? Is it just one file that installs automatic, or do I have to follow some steps manually?

Cheers,

David

@all……Old Bios v3109
Ppl asking for this Bios often. Therefor I did upload a rar with everything needed to flash your bios to v3109.

I reflashed because my AAO didnt boot anymore on v3114. Since my reflash I had not problem what so ever anymore. With flashes of bios I recommend dont try to fix what isnt broken. So I wont flash anymore till it will give me advantages.

here the link for Bios v3109:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0X6WIQ7D

@David

The driver for de SDHC isnt installed by me so far. It’s not clear if yes or no some registry edits are needed. I will test that later after I bought myself a SDHC card and will post the results.

If en when it seems to work fine on this TinyXp I will upload the files and short instruction to get it working,

I am really sorry about my comment above. I was really pissed yesterday. But I REALLY am SORRY!

peace

pGhi

Thanks Ron!

Possible silly question…why are there 5 RAR files? Are all of the *.GHO files the same?

Thanks!

@Susan… I guess you have to unpack them with winrar to one folder and there you can find those 3 files :)

Hi Ron!

Can you tell me how I can install language pack to Windows because we have a few letters that doesnt exist in English so it would help me alot!

Thanks for advance!

pGhi

@pGhi,
Well, that is what I did, but there all five of the archives include the same TINYXPAAO.GHO file and the winrar program asks me if I want to overwrite the previous version. Maybe it’s me, but that seems a little odd.

@susan

no worries just unrar the first one, winrar will auto unrar all the parts into one folder.

Ron did you have any issues downgrading your bios? I want to go back to 3109.

@al

Thanks! Worked great.

Just a quick way to format usb stick to FAT; for those who are having trouble doing this in windows xp (i.e. myself lol)

just type format /FS:FAT x: (in DOS)

replace x with the drive letter and windows will format the device without any issues.

David

@pGhi…you can do that with Windows Update……..Windows Update can be done with FireFox as well!!!….google for the add on…..Firefox and widows update.

@Susan…..I had 5 files uploaded to Rapidshare when questions came for MegaUpload and Rewindlab told me I can upload files as big as 1GB to MU…..as free user you can doownload thatas well…..so I just put the 5 files in 1 file.

@Al no I did the downgrade as well, came from 3114, which delivered me a “dead” AAO….reflashed back to 3109 and no problems since anymore.

Ron

Great stuff. I am absolutely pleased with it. You should open a forum so that we can help each other with problems.
How do I change the dutch words (e.g. when you hover over the time at the bottom right) to english?
Also how can I change to german keyboard? I have an english system put as I am german I type with my keyboard set to german. I tried the firefox extension but it only works with older versions, I have 3.0.3.
Last question: can I make my own ghost image with that version of ghost from the rar files ?

@Stefan….no forum I stay faithfull to this blog of 2manydjs ;-)

Change the set location of your settings from NL to US/UK for your clock.

Wel to change your keyboard..Widows update is the easiest and best way. I geuss you have to wait for a newe update of the add-ons….or install a lower version of firefox again…it is not that much mb to download and a lot better than to download IE!

Yes you can make your own Image with that ghost version…my image was made with it as well :)

Thank you Ron.
I tried to install AVG antivirus but it fails due to “unsupported windows version”. As I don’t have an external cd rom I can’t use my full xp version to add to tiny xp. Same problem with trying to install my MDA Touch as a USB modem. A driver is missing and I can’t install it. Any ideas?

Hiya Ron,

I’ve got a question about the mouse pad. I noticed that sometimes when I press on it, some icon appears. Did you install some special feature for the mouse, if so is there a manual on how to use it (e.g. scrolling).

Cheers!
David

Wifi problem Fixed! (wifi dropping issues)

If anyone is having problems with their wifi. (i.e. myself) I fixed it by downloading this driver: WLAN_Atheros_v7.6.1.149. (from the acer site) and install both the driver AND the software. The driver alone will not make it better. It also seems to download faster! The software itself gives u the ability to make different profiles (uni, home, work, etc) and can also set the power save on/off etc, it’s great! oh it will show in the system tray though, but only as a connection bar, so not so intrusive!

hope this helps someone!

cheers!

David

The mousepad of the AAO is unfamiliar terrain for me :-( . So I cant realy help you on that. I noticed that the pad moves fast sometimes and click when you do not expect it….Doing some adjustments in control panel….mouse settings….made it or me some better. On the forum I saw a post about making the mousepad scrolling with 2 fingers…it is under the windows software section.

@Stefan…..dont use AVG my experience is that it slows the AAO down o much….I use Kingston Internet Security (the free trial is 180 Days!!!!!!!) and it is the fastest and best one I used so far….It is also based on Kaspersky I think, not sure.

About the MDA I dont have any clou ;-) ….but did you tried windows update when the MDA is attached? You googled fot the right driver for the MDA?….XP sp3?

Anyway to get this running of the usb thumbdrive.

Hi Ron
Had really decided to give up my linpus ao for a new windows model. but your image gave it new life. Instructions where excellent. Thank you so much.
Best regards
Anders

@James…??????????..sorry don’t understand what you try to say or ask

@Anders….welcome to the happy XP AAO users and its all my pleasure to be helpfull.

greetz Ron

Sorry, was wondering if it is possible to install the image onto a USB thumb drive and run windows off that instead of the SSD. I tried and it just gives a the blue screen of death when it loads.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the work. It is awesome.
Got a guestion here, I tried to install Asian language support, however, I got a warning message and unable to complete the task.
Just wondering if you’ve disabled the support of other languages.

Has anyone run into the same problem?

thanks a lot.

vwang

@ James…..I’m affraid it won’t, it’s not a “live” version.

@vwang….read above, I’ve answered this one enough for now….1 hint….windows update!

Thank you Ron!!

Highly recommend this to anyone who has any doubts, the whole process took less than half an hour from starting the instructions to posting this!

Had the nLite installed as per the instructions on the EEE use forum but this seems even better.

Thanks again for a great Image

after i chose the default in unibootin, i got an error saying cant find the image file : ubninit…. please help me

@ Wong, I had the same problem at first. You need internet connection when creating the boot USB (step 1), otherwise it will just create an empty file (ubninit).

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

David

hi 2 all, thanx ron for the image, works great onto a 110l with italian language package! :) wanna now if there’s is the hibernation and how 2 enable it! :) ) thanx

@stefano…..START -> CONTROL PANEL -> POWER OPTIONS -> TAB HIBERNATE.

thanx a lot ron! uh-oh, to me it’s very slow because i have 1.5 gb of ram.. :)

ron will you slim down also vista? cuz im planning to add a 4200 rpm 30 gb hard drive and wanna now if you’ll make another ghost image! :)

THANKS A LOOOOT! italy’s proud of your work! :)

i’ve changed my mind, after some hibernation it really helps speedin up, in fact now it takes approx 40 secs to shut down and 20 to turn on (ron’s xp pro with office 2007 & eset nod32 3.x)

:)

@Stefano

I have TinyVista image running on FAT32!!! but I’m not completely satisfied to upload the image. And oday I’ve decided to stop with that project!….waiting for the more promising Windows 7. But with your new HDD you can install Vista without a problem. I will make a new XP install and tweak it a little more and add some more apps and make SDHC seen as HDD as well try to make it readboost.

For the eyecandy (vista) I will make it look like Vista or OS X…not sure yet which one.

Hi!

Everything went fine for me but i cant run windows update. It fails on the genuine advantage download. Therefore i cant install the portuguese keyboard layout.

I already installed the firefox windows update add on…

Can someone help me?

Thanks!

ok ronnie, thankx a lot! :)

after running this for a few days it has really slowed down. it now cannot keep up with me typing, opening a new website the computer freezes for a few seconds (page loads but I can’t scroll or type) it is still usable just very annoying.

Hi
Trying to install Rons tiny Xp
having a problem
I get as far as booting off the USB it comes up with Default I press enter go to the next screen select option one
go the A prompt change to C:
thats Ok
then enter ghost and get told \bad command or File name
I think I did all the setup Ok, so confused as to why I can’t launch the program
Any help most appreciated
Ian

Hi Ron, may i know what are the tweaks that u’ve done with the XP

i’va already installed XP n some other things, but i’m not really interested in using EWF, so if you say the tweaks that u’ve made is enough, then may i know what are those…

thanks

@Ian…did you copy ghost.exe to the flashdrive? or type “dir” the [enter]…it should show the content of the flashdrive…if not then it should be an other drive lik d: e: or so. The bad command just is because you enter ghost.exe in a ditectory where ghost isnt in.

@nuno…..did you updated FireFox to a newer version like 3.0.4? there you find more problems to update even with windowsupdate add on. The quick and dirty way to solve is just google for IE 6 and use it for updating…To make it work in FireFox 3.0.4 try to also use add-on IE Tab…and changes several options in FireFox….and google can help you most probably when errors, and there will be, occurs.

@al….cant help you with the problems you mention…it is to difficult to see what you all do on your machine, what you have installed etc…..If you have surfed a lot try tweaking firefox more so it doesn’t use caching, temp files and so on.

But it looks like you have installed a program or service (maybe anti-virus) which eat al the reading/writing speed from an to the SSD. Not heard of it before though.

@Kei…that is way to much work to name and explain them all…..just google to speed up and tweak XP….you will find a lot of them….then with try and error you can do all tweaking you like.

@NUNO……get IE 7 from the link….you dont have to install IE at all then….just run it….when running type in address bar ie. http://www.msn.com……when page loaded…..go to tools….then windows update…..should work now!

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=43IEW8SP

Hi Ron thanks for the Info
Still having some Problems. When I format the USB I’m given the EXFAT or FAT 32 tried it in EX FAT but the Acer running Linux doesn’t recognize the USB, it does if i Format in FAT 32.
I managed to get Ghost to load got as far as the Setup everything going well about 15 % in get an error message Integrity error or somethin like that.
Any ideas ?
Regards
ian

@ ALL….I made it easy for you all to install UK keyboard layout. I downloaded the neede DLL and made a REG file:

Steps:
1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/nl/?d=FIBI5JBQ
2) put “KBDUK.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click UKLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

David pls a message if this worked for you!

Thanks Ron, I am having a look around this thing tonight to see what is slowing it down. just got a class 6 SDHC so I may look into using that to help speed it up. as for installed programs all I did was added msn and mapped two network drives everything else is just like your image.

IT WORKS!!!!

THANKS A MILLION RON!!

WOW! I’ve been trying to do this for days!

yea! yea! yea!

You’re the best!

@al……those 2 mapped network drives are indexing all the time?

@David fine it worked….need to get the right DLL and right settings for the reg and the n easy done!…..well glad it worked for you.

@ALL…made the Portugues (Portugal) keyboard Lay-out as well:

Steps:
1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QPCUNW8C
2) put “KBDPO.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click PortuguesPortugalLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

Nuno pls a message if this worked for you!

Ron, mapped drives disconnected and it still slow well I shouldn’t say slow more like freezing for a second or two then works great until I open something new then it freezes again. but when it is not frozen it is fast.

Thanks a MILLION Ron!!!

Worked PERFECTLY!!!!! Cannot thank you enough!!!

And thanks for ALL your work! Your work is easily THE BEST for the Aspire One!

Ron, one thing i forgot to mention. The keyboard layout changes worked PERFECTLY, but the windows update error continues.

I´ve downloaded IE7 portable edition you gave me and followed all your instructions but to no avail.

However, i don´t need windows update anymor, since i already fixed the keyboard!!!

Still got to fix that litlle 3 seconds freeze once in a while…

After 4 hours my cpu temp is 54ºc and the fan is 66ºc. Is this ok? I never had any software like this so i don´t know if this is normal or to hot. What do you say?

Again, thanks!

@ Nuno…I wonder why those 3 seconds freezes happens….not had that experience myself…..
1) Did you changed from FAT32 to NTFS?
2) Did you disable D2D in your Bios!!!!!!!!!!

The cpu temperature sound fine to me,,,no problemo!

greetz Ron

Ron,

I didn´t change to NTFS and i didn´t disabled D2D in Bios (don´t even know how to do that).

The slowdown doesn´t occur when im earing music or watching a movie. It´s when im doing regular stuff on pc: writing a document, opening a folder, navigating in the web… things like that.

I only have 512 RAM… maybe that´s the problem… however the computer it´s really fast when it´s not freazing.

Nuno

Hi Ron, I have the same problem as Nuno, but I assumed that its because I still have a 512 ram. Did not upgrade yet, thats why i’m not worried about the freeze.

Nuno do you have 512 ram as well? Ron has 1536 ram, so maybe that is why we get that 3 sec freeze.

Ron, what do you think?

Cheers,

David

Nuno…when booting hit F2 to enter the bios…under a tab (think “main”) you’llfind D2D….disable that save and reboot…..I’m sure you will be faster and am curious if this will stop your 3sec freezes. Anyhow disabling D2D is a MUST!

More RAM would definately help……but can you describe the freeze?…maybe it’s just the time needed to start the application

Oops instead of adjusting my message I posted it :-)
Don’t need to describe David…see it’s the same as with Nuno.

I bet it has to do with D2D…..it seems will writing doc or something like that it makes a “temp file” or back up and write that to the SSD.

Ron,

Thanks for the instructions on disabling D2D. I´ll do that tomorrow (my girlfriend is in Amsterdam with the Aspire until tomorrow!).

I guess it´s that temp file thing, not the launch of programs because usually they launch VERY quickly!

Great blog and great work Ron! Thanks a million!

Hi Ron, I have already disabled the D2D, so I dont think its that.
Mine freeze when I open a firefox, when trying to type an address, it freezes for a shor while then continues, but I thought it was because of the low ram I had.

I did not understand what you ment with the temp file, and yes like Nano when opening a program its quick, its just when you take an action it hangs for a while.

Thnks,

David

Guys….I mean with temp files….the caching from firefox…..David when only with FireFox it most probably is yout firewall/internet connection. Can’t imagine it is your RAM.

Im using windows firewall only (dont even have anti-virus installed yet).

I also put cache space at 0 in firefox, so it doesn´t caches any web pages, but to no avail.

I still haven´t disabled D2D (don´t have aspire with me until tomorrow).

I´ve noticed that the paging file of RAM is set to 0, so there is no paging file. I alway´s thought that having a big paging file helped to speed up th PC´s. Am i incorrect here?

Hi Ron,

I don’t think its either of them. At the moment I’m using windows firewall and no antivirus software. My internet connection is 8mb, I normally download at around 800 kbps MAX. So I dont think its that either. Yesterday I did another clean install of your image, and I still get the same problem.

Do you think I should move my temp files, etc to an sdhc card (as a HDD)? Or do u have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

David

(continue)

Oh btw, like Nano, I’ve also have VPN connection and Mapped 1 Drive, but they dont auto connect. They are offline by default. So I don’t think its that.

this is awesome! i hope there’s a way to dual boot between tinyxp and linpus lite. T_T

i hope you could help me with this, ron.

please let me know ron if it is going to be possible. it would be briliant.

Hi Ron,

Let me start by saying “Thank you thank you thank you”. And by the way – thank you ! Just gave this a try on my Aspire One 1GB RAM 120GB HDD Linux machine, and so far it works like a charm. I don’t want to get carried away just yet, but if it keeps up like this I owe you big time. I bought an Aspire with Linux, but quickly found it to be rather less than desirable, to put it as politely as I can. I gave your XP a go and I am in love with my Aspire One all over again. Superb.

Just one question. How do I change the keyboard to German ? I will follow the tip you gave for maing it Portuguese and see if other languages are bundled, and if not I hope you can point me in the right direction.

Once again, absolutely fantastic, thank you so much for this. My Aspire was a total waste of money with Linux on it, and now you have given me a working machine that seems to function on so many more levels than it ever did with Linux on it.

Cheers,

Simon.

@jhedrotten…yes it’s possible TinyXP is like a normal XP install…just stripped and tweaked….so multi boot is possible

@Nuno…because you use SSD paging file is not wise…to much writing to the SSD…Paging file is kind of back up to restore to an earlier point in XP. Takes t much resources on the SSD….when you use sd/SDHC card you can page on that. But not neccesary.

@David…..you can use ebooster with sd/sdhc card…..works like readyboost in Vista….meaning common used programs starts from there, temp file, documents etc goes to the card.

Sorry, just one more question I forgot, and this was also a problem when Linux was installed – my wireless connection on the Aspire will not connect to the internet when my other laptop is already connected. Do you know how to fix this ? I ask because my wife is sometimes on the other laptop, and I may like to also surf at the same time using the Aspire.

Cheers,

Simon.

@ALL…made the Portugues (Portugal) keyboard Lay-out as well:

Steps:
1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/nl/?d=GHANJ05E
2) put “KBDFR.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click FrenchLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

Pachanka pls a message if this worked for you!

OOPS message above isnot Portuguese BUT FRENCH KEYBOARD

Hi Ron,

I am not sure if you mean my question about input languages, but I asked for German. Swiss German to be precise.
Anyway, any help much appreciated.

Simon.

@ Simon…..looks like an IP problem
1) You use same fixed IP# on both laptops?
2) Your Wireless router is set-up to dhcp? and not enough IP addresses to the network?
Both laptops need to have unique IP addresses in a network.
Or did your Aspire didnt get to Wireless connection at all?…then your router is most probably set up to accept wireless connection based on (also) mac addresses.

Anyhow this has nothing to do with this image…networking is based on DHCP…getting their IP# from the router/dhcp server

I work with 4 laptops wireless at same time (incl the AA1)

SWISS (GERMAN) KEYBOARD LAY-OUT

1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/nl/?d=HCKC0TEW
2) put “KBxxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

Simon pls a message if this worked for you!

Thanks a million Ron. I will give it a go now.

By the way, I was not saying that it was the fault of your image that my aspire didn’t connect. I was just wondering if anyone here could help. It does seem to half-connect to my network. It says connects to the WLAN but gives a message “Limited or no connectivity” with no internet connection.

Yeah seems you got a network (IP) problem just enable DHCP in Linpus and I bet the problem will be solved!

>>just enable DHCP in Linpus

I can say with a smile on my face that I won’t be enabling it in Linpus anymore. I am sooo happy that is now a horrible experience in the past. I won’t be going there again anytime soon, you can be sure of that.

And your Swiss German keyboard fix works like a charm. I wish I could buy you a beer or two for all this help you have given me.

CHEERS…..would love the beer!….with XP you still have the wireless problem?……then it is your wireless router settings…because dhcp is enabled in my image

I’m actually just about to try and Google how to enable DHCP in XP.

OK. Seems to work fine now. I read in another forum post to go to the advanced tab of the wireless network connection properties and enable “Allow other users to connect through this computers internet connection”, and I shut down wireless and restarted, and now I have internet pages. Excellent. Me happy.

You have no idea how happy it makes me feel to see XP running fine on my Aspire One. I’ve been kicking myself all week for buying one with Limpus on it.

Hello Ron,

Just a question about eBoostr. Do I have to make my sd slot HDD ready to work with the software or will it work just as it is?

David

@ David….as it is…yout left sd slot is SDHC ready

D2D off, caching off I am using the left card slot with a sdhc card in it and eboostr. i don’t see any improvements though I still have the freezing problem. either way i have decided that a 2 second freeze every now and then is better then fighting with linpus so I am not putting anymore time into finding the cause.

whoa that’s going to be awesome! if so, how do i do it? because i have installed a lot on my linpus lite and i do need linux for personal reasons but i also need xp for some compatibility issues. how does it work? do i just create a new partition on the SSD? and i do i choose which one to boot if so? does it have a bootloader like grub? i will really appreciate it if i could dual boot between your custom tinyxp and the default linpus lite on my machine. thanks in advance.

If you want to dual boot, you need a bootloader. But as I understand now…you want to keep your existing Linpus and put the XP image on a other partition.

I would advise you to install GRUB in linpus as bootloader.

@ AL I will reinstall the Image and go step by step installing software if its really annoying…..mine works flawless….or just wait for v2 i am working on and which I most probably will make available again…..will look lik vista as well.

Thanks Ron, I have it running ok now the freezing seems to only effect a hand full of us. now with temp/tmp/pagefile/firefox cache all running on sd and eboostr 2gig cache the freezing is minimal. I will definitely wait and install your V.2 as this image works far better then any other.

Hi Ron, I did the same as Al, and the freezing is still there but less. I will also wait for your v2.

Thanks,

David

please teach me how master ron. i would really appreciate it. thanks so much for your time.

i can make partition but i do not know how to make GRUB work or how to get it.

oh wait ron, to save you the hassle, i just thought of this one: is it possible if i just install your perfect image on my 8gb USB drive and then boot from there [using F2 in the splash screen] if I feel like booting XP? thanks. if that’s possible then excellent.

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much,

Is this work with 3305 bios firmware? and can install any application like itunes, games, etc without freezing SSD while writing, .

many thanks,

yes,Yes<yes….without freezing I don’t know

@ rotten…..try to put image back to the USB stick as you put the image back to the SSD……maybe it works well then.

has anyone tried doing it? installing your version on a usb flash disk?

you mean on step 23 of this guide, is should choose the desired usb pen drive instead os the ssd, is this correct?

Thanks Ron, i have an ext USB drive and worked fine under Xp now not recognized? both laptops are running Ver 09 fine, but now no USB drive mounted? Anyone seen this before?

i tried asking for help at aspireoneuser.com/forum if someone have already tried booting your version from USB flash disk. let’s see what we’ll find. hehehe. if i have 2 AAO-110, then i would have no problem since this release is already perfect for me.

@rotten…..no..yes….yeah:)

@Neil…weird problem..but try the following….right click on my computer—>manage—>disk management…see if you can give that usb drive an other drive letter.

oh so i’ll try on installing it on a usb flash drive then.

problem solved! drive had a bad mft….I used GETDATABACK v.3.50 to fix all is well….

Tried it on my AAO but I think I’ll go back to standard XP.

-Can’t install Swedish keyboard layout

-No automatic updates, my system is a sitting duck for when the next big security flaw in XP is detected. Regular Windows Update doesn’t work either, even when I tricked my system into running IE by typing http://www.windowsupdate.com into My Computer window.

-No easy way to launch IE, which is needed for some sites

-Had to spend a lot of time undoing tweaks that made the system annoying to use. Eg. no menu delay, no balloon tips, no User picture etc.

There’s probably more. Basically it’s quicker to install regular XP and do a few tweaks than to install this and undo lots of tweaks.

Yes Jimmy you should go back to the standard XP, will fit you better. ;-)

I have so comments on this image, I think Ron did a really good job. It is, ofcourse, not for everyone, but in my case, I wasn’t looking for a laptop replacement, that is why this image is perfect for me as it is. It is quick and easy to use and has everything I need to work with.

David

*so = no!

( I only wish there was a way I could easily edit my post lol) :)

TO RON(NL)

i have a EEE PC and i would like to install tinyxp rev.09 that i have as an iso. your rls is optimized for aspire one though….

can you give me instruction on how to turn this iso into a bootable usbstick?

@david…lol yeah I could use an edit tool here as well….thanks for your comments and your right this image doesn’t really works different from normal XP (working on that now). In general it’s for at least 95% compatible wit all windowsapps you like to use. If you want IE then get IE install and uninstall FireFox. But if you don’t want to be a sitting duck? DONT USE IE at all. And use a good Internet security suite! I do and I never update a thing when it’s working. No attacks/virusses/spam and so on on my AA1.

@xx the only optimizing for the AA1 are the drivers (EEEPC use somtimes the same). I didnt tried to make a bootable usbstick. But you could try to install the image like written in the instruction…Only choose instead c: drive you USBstick…It will install also the MBR on the stick….and maybe you’re lucky to boot from there. You need at least a 2GB stick!

Hi

thanks so much, works fine with me with 3305 firmware update and my only problem is its webcam,

i saw that it has acer web cam application but i can’t view the image,. and were it is,

thanks,

riyunikenshee

Hi,

thanks ,

hardware problem, now its working fine and great,

thanks,

more power.

Ron, I reloaded the image and have no freezing now so it was something I did. going step by step with things I need to try and find out what is bad.looking forward to V.2 thanks again.

Hi!

@ Ron: finally got my hands on the aspire and disabled D2D. It IS faster, but the freezing, although less, it´s still there.

Im gonna wait for your next image, i don´t want to bother you with this problem since only a few people have it.

Thanks so much for all your help.

@ Al:

You said “now with temp/tmp/pagefile/firefox cache all running on sd and eboostr 2gig cache the freezing is minimal”.

I also have a 8GB SD card in the left slot, but i have only 512 ram on my A110. Can i do what you did? If so, can you explain me how?

Thanks

@nuno I just reloaded the image and that freezing gone now. but I had used a driver i found on aspireuser forums to make the left card reader a fixed drive then manually moved my temp folders there, turned on page file for that drive and used a second SD card for eboostr 2 gig cache. but even with 1 gig of ram and all that done it was still slower then it is now with a fresh install of Rons image. everything I did I just copied it from other users on the forum there I really couldn’t write a step by step for you + it was alot of work for very little gain I would try and reinstall if I was you.

@Al:

Thanks for your response Al, if the steps you made solved the problem i would search all things and do it myself, but, as you, say, it was still slow, i guess i won´t do that.

A fresh install is easy, i would that, no problem. I remember i had a few different things on my install from the guide. The letter for the USB wasn´t C: but G: or B: (can´t remember exactly, BUT it wasn´t C:) and in this step:

“23) CHOOS LOCAL DESTINATION: select your SSD drive (part 2/size 7695) the hit [ENTER]“…. it wasn´t part2 either, it was part1 and i had NO OTHER OPTION. But it worked nonetheless and the only problem really is the 2/3 seconds lockup.

Maybe i´ll wait for ron´s next image to see if it solves the problem and mess around with this installation first.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for creating this, I had gotten quite frustrated with the Linpus OS and it’s limited abilities (even though I had been able to modify it quite a bit) but at the same time was stuck to it because of the “slow ssd” model I have. This version of XP really works perfectly, it’s very fast and gives me better battery-time than Linpus!

Hi Ron,

Just a question about formatting the USB memory stick to FAT.

What would actually happen if I use a FAT32 USB memory stick, the reason why i’m asking is, because I have a 8GB USB stick and it can’t format to FAT, cause the size is too big, so it only support FAT32.

I have installed the image, using the FAT32, and I was just wondering, if this may be affect the speed of the AAO? dunno no.

Thanks,

David

Hi Ron

I have formatted the usb as per your instruction.
When I boot the AAO I get to the page where I can select defualt. Once I select it I get a message saying missing file UBNINIT. I have browsed the usb stick and the file is there.

Hey Ron, I just got around to flashing my BIOS back to 3109. the rar file that you posted here has a file in it called “ZD5_3109.fd” this needs to be “ZG5_3109.fd”

@David….I will nt effect the speed on the AA1….The image is not dependable on the usb stick or device it comes from. The imge depepends on getting ghost working no matter how…I had same problems with a 4 gb stick….couldnt boot from FAT32 stick with the tools I’ve supplied.

@Brad….when you used the tool to put FreeDos on the stick…you had Internet connection? It gets the file live from internet. And you used FAT and not FAT32?…It should work unless the stick isn’t bootable…then you need the tool from HP to make it bootable…her a link to a nice and short tutorial http://www.victorchen.info/create-a-bootable-usb-memory-stick/

Just my two cents:

i used a 8GB usb stick, and i formatted it to fat32 (no other option in windows format). It worked fine.

@Al, I didn’t understand what you ment with the BIOS you downloaded. Why do I need to change the number?

I also want to flash back to 3109, eventhough 3305 is working fine, but I don’t trust it too much.

Is there any particular reason why you went back?

Cheers,

David

He Ron,

A question about Version 2 you’re making.

How is the project going? I have to say I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m sure many people too.

I just wanted to know if its going to be any time soon, because lately I’m checking almost three times a day, thinking its going to be now, lol, im getting paranoid! Thats why if I know that it will take a while, I can relax I hope.

Thanks,

Lili

Hey Lili,

Don’t get paranoid. It will take I think at least another 2 weeks. Sorry but I have important things in private right now.

But what has been done till now……I use TinyXP Pro SP3, Tweaked more settings (and still some to come), It has the looks and feel of Vista with all the aero and o on in it (need some work on the speed though)…going to add folders on desktop with keyboard layout files plus instruction, applications I think would be nice to run ie Office, Digsby etc. Need to implement the Hitachi filter to make the sdhc slot seen as a fixed hard drive…..then test if more tweaks are needed…then it will most probably be available to a few to test the new one.

So sit back and relax;-)
Ron

@david I went back to 3109 because I needed the lower brightness levels back. this saves battery and I often use my one in bed and don’t like my wife getting mad because of the blinding bright screen with 3305. only bad thing about 3109 over 3305 is the fan stays on longer now but with aaofancontrol or a1crt that is a nonissue. as for the file when I tried to flash it failed to open the .fd file, I noticed that all the other bios files were named ZG5_xxxx.fd so I just renamed it ( change D to G) and tried and it worked perfect.

@Ron

For version 2 can you maybe try to have all the icons on the desktop removable? I like a clean desktop but i cannot remove the acerweb cam icon on this version.

@ AL…yes is fixed on desktop not by me but the installed driver for the webcam. But of course I know how to handle that too/

To remove the webcam icon on desktop do the following:

1) Right click on “My Computer” choose “Registry Editor”

2) Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\

3) Below NameSpace you see “Delegated Folders” click on this and you will see one entry.

4) Right click on “Delegated Folders” choose “Delete” -> say ok on the windows which ask if you want delete folder and subkey.

5) Right click on desktop and choose “refresh”

6) Voila Icon is gone. :-)

Thank you I knew there was a regedit I could do I just wasn’t sure. now with a clean desktop and no freezing this thing is perfect. ok maybe if it could open beer for me it would be perfect but it’s damn close now.

I just reflashed my bios back to 3109 and reinstalled the image step by step, and my AAO also works faster now; no more 3 sec freeze! it is working absolutely fine now, and I only have 512ram!

Cheers!

@David

You have only 512 ram? I´ve never flashed my bios, so i guess i still have the original (3109). I always updated my One through the live-update but that never updates the bios, right?

@Nuno..windows does not update your Bios…you need to do that yourself…with a bootstick (USB).

At boot press F3 to get in your bios and there you can check your version……depending when it was produced decide the bios version.

@David.. watch closely what happen with the response when you install software again…maybe you can find the cause of the 3 sec delay…if and when it occurs again…let’s hope not!!!!

Ron thanks for the quick xp version.

Leaves me with one question, is it possible to work with remote desktop, or is this function removed?

@Ron, as soon as I notice anything strange, I’ll let u know. I hope it doesn’t happen though.

The only thing I noticed from reflashing back to original bios (3109), is that the fan runs louder, but only when I start and shut-down the AAO. This didn’t happen on the 3305, it was very low, but I will keep the 3109, seems to work better (no freezes).

Writing this post, I just noticed that the fan started to run and I’m only at CPU 50, its suppose to run at 65! does this happen to anyone else?

Ron, do you know where you saved the AAO fan control file, so that I can delete it and update it with the new version? The new one seems to be better, as it has an extra option ( you can set fan on degree and fan off degree).

@David…I saved it in c:/windows…I think folder Fancontrol

Hi Ron,

Followed your instructions and now my AA1 works great. Thanks a lot.

There’s one problem though. My AA1 could not display Chinese characters even after I installed the East Asian Languages files from my Window CD.

Is there any missing windows component that I should install?

SP….did you put the codes in your registry and changed the language in the bar as mentioned several times above?

Thanks Ron. Problem solved by downloading the Chinese clear type fonts from Microsoft.

Hi Ron,

I’ve been using your image about 2 weeks from now. And I’d say it works perfect with AAO! I’m much satisfied with all the configuration you did and also I love the application that comes within the image.

I bought a usb modem dongle here in the Philippines so I can surf where ever I want. But the thing is after the LongCheer WM66 modem install its built in drivers and now trying to connect to the internet, I got an error saying there’s no profile. My ISP is Smartbro http://www.smart.com.ph\smartbro, its uses a dialer method just like using a dial modem with username and password. I think you have disable the dial up mode or something like that. I really like your image so I just want to resolve my usb modem to work with your Ron’s image.

Hope you can help about this so I will not go again in the normal XP OS which occupy more with my small 8gig SSD.

Advance thanks

Alexis

@Ron
I like to use Remote desktop, but is it removed in this XP version?

yep

ok thanks anyhow Ron.

Hello,

I downloaded the file and tried to make the usb. But with step 10 I get the comment that an other file needs to be used, the one in part 2. When I click that one it says it needs the file from part 3. And so on….. When I trie part 5 it says that I should start with a previous file… How can I get the tinyxpaao.gho on my usb to make it work?….. Many thanks in advance!

I`ve managed to get it working. Dis something wrong, but don`t know what exactly….. Now I just need to figure out why my mireless isn`t working…. It can see my network…but I can`t Get it connected. Probably just a simple error…

@Redmar, I had the same problem ,you need to read the other posts above, its all already answered.

Cheers,

David

Good and fast working program on A110. One problem: Outlook 2003 can send mail but will not receive mail. Error 0×80040154. Update Office 2003 SP3 will not solve the problem. Please, do you have advise?
Thanks in advance!
Wim

Dear Ron,

I was hoping that you can arrange for a Swedish keyboard installation as well. Because like all others, I cannot use Windows Update because of two Windows Update files that fail to install from the website.

Another Swede trying to install a Swedish keyboard!
Installed Tiny XP and everything is running smooth (except the Keyboard!)
Thanks Ron for the effort!

Thanks For the RS links RON!! saved me from buying a ext cd drive :-D

Oh no..

So exited, but…

When I try to boot from the usb it says…

NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart

Then I’m back to horible horrible limpus.

Please help

Thanks Ron for the program. It is fantastic. Is there any chance or way to install remote desktop?

Thanks,
Kelly

@ Terence……you cant boot TinyXP from the usbstick…
did you try to make the stick bootable with the supplied format tool?….choose FreeDos and be sure you have Internet connection…without internet the tool doesn’t work…it get the files live from the internet and write them to the USB stick to make it bootable.

@Kelly…yes it is possible…you need the files to install the services.

The Swedish Keyboard files will be coming soon…working on them.

SWEDISH KEYBOARD LAY-OUT

1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=50NW5EIF
2) put “KBxxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

Simon pls a message if this worked for you!

Ron,
you are DA man!!!
Driving me crazy to find those “a” and “o” with small dots on top on a Swedish keyboard with US layout code.
Was thinking about changing the name of file kbdsw.dll to kbdus.dll to fool the system?

My gosh….this worked sooooooo WELL!

Thanks for the image Ron! Fantastic effort!

Installed on a AAO 150(16G SSD).

Martin

Installed a Qualcom 3G modem without problem.
Installation files on the USB stick!

Also running a network hard disk without problem.

Just the keyboard!

@Knoten…..wont work to fool the system like that..lol the code in the DLL stays the same.

@Martin…glad to see an other happy user ;)

Thanks Ron.

I used the files mstc.exe and mstscax.dll and when I try to launch the program I get “the system cannot find the file specified. C:\WINDOWS32\\mstsc.exe.MUI

I hit ok then nothing happens

Sorry the path did not come through…it should have been
“C:\WINDOWS32\\mstc.exe.MUI”

@Kelly….C:\WINDOWS32\\mstc.exe.MUI….????….u sure

Each time I type it the dissapears between the \\

LANG_NAME with < on either name dissapears

I have an operating system on my Aspire One now but I just wanted to know, what fan control software is in that. Does it work all right and is it available separately ?

Thanks Ron – could not be more easier.

I have one problem. I can’t install UK keyboard inout.
all my @ sings are ” and vice-versa.
Windows won’t allow me to install IE to get the updates. It comes up with a big red cross and says IE cannot install. I can’t choose any other language to install from XP disc from the Regional settings in control panel – there’s no options in the drop downs.
I attempted also to copy over the KBDUK.DLL but this was already present. The reg file posted above (megaupload) is no longer available – would this fix my problem?

I know you’re working hard but I’d appreciate the help.

In return ( ;-) ) I can tell you and the visitors that Remote Desktop will work on this release.
You need to copy over 2 files (mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll) from a working XP installation in windows\system32\
Also (from same folder) the whole folder and contents of us-en (three .mui files within). Double clicking mstsc.exe will them open up the remote log-in window. No shortcut is created however – this needs to be done manually.

lol.

Scratch that. The download is now available and all fixed.
Hope the remote desktop hint helps anyway.
Thanks Ron :-)
Genius work.

ok fixed it I just didn’t have a bootable usb.

Cheers Ron, I really hated linpus.

Thanks Mick for the tip! Remote desktop runs like a charm now :)

Oh great. Glad I helped someone :-)

Have to say, I’ve ran a version of TinyXP on a laptop for a looooong time with little or no resolvable problems, but on this Acer, this release is flaky as hell. Progs won’t install/uninstall, registry entries won’t delete, lots of freezes. Will not deny it’s great work by Ron and a million miles from what I could do, but it’s falling short of workable in my opinion – sorry. Way, way too many services disabled perhaps.
I desperately wanted XP on this so I could work with certain WINX apps on the road and was so pleased to see this uo and running, but it’s back to Linpus for me I’m afraid.
NO disrespect whatsoever to Ron. Sincerely.

M

@Mick

I just have to say, this is NOT an official release from acer! So don’t treat it like one! This is a complete volunteer project by Ron! I really appreciate what he has done.

I personally have no problem whatseover with deleting registries or uninstalling prgs, so I dont know what you’r on about. I had some hickups at first (UK keyboard, 3 sec freezes), but all that have been resolved very quickly with the help of Ron.

Another thing: this is a webbook.. not a laptop, so dont treat it as a laptop replacement, in my opinion it has everything needed to work on the road. If you want to go back to (crap) linpus, thats fine, but we dont need posts like that here! you say “no disrespect”, but how can you say that, after you’ve just put his release down like that??

@Ron

RESPECT!

@ Mick…Windows can never be perfect! I don’t know what you all like to install but over 90% should work just like that. Did you installed and uninstalled more programs? And not kept your registry and installed services clean?….More people had freezes and after they reinstalled the image and only installed what they needed it works fine.

And I have to agree with David…It’s just a netbook nothing more!

Mick the post about the remote desktop was a good one.

Success with Linux!

@ Gvidor….yes the fancontrol tool is available (update version)
Windows XP & Vista. This was terrific work by Ralf (a.k.a. LoveTheOne).

You can get it here:
http://www.computentsystems.de/aceraspireonefancontrol/

Thanks for taking my comments as they were meant Ron.
I have passed this URL and info onto many people and have even re-installed the image again today myself. I didn’t put it down, I just am honest enough to say there were problems experienced. if people didn’t say as such how would things ever be approached??

@David – grow up for goodness sake. Ron’s a big boy and can talk for himself, I’m sure he doesn’t need embarrassing sycophants muddying the waters and stipulating what posts should and shouldn’t be allowed on HIS blog.
Thanks for blindly ignoring the fact that I also made an attempt to help the project with the Remote Desktop hint.

@Mick

I wasn’t trying to be nasty or anything like that.

I was, just like you, pointing out some general facts.
Lets not argue on this blog pls, it will only make things messy.

Cheers!

ps. no hard feelings ;)

Already forgotten about David. I would imagine neither of us have the time or inclination to be arguing.

I’ve re-installed today and kept as clean as I can. I’ve not bothered with Bluetooth implementation as that was a big problem. I think the software played a big part in it though. I couldn’t uninstall OR delete registry keys. Very odd.
I’m running Adobe Photoshop CS4 on it at the moment though with no issues, which was something I wanted to try.

Thak you all for your help with Remote desktop……now I am having one more issue.

Under advanced options tab in RMD I am unable to change my “connect from anywhere” settings to enable TS gateway. the seetings option is greyed out and the message using gatetway is not supported by your system configuration.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanx for your good work Ron!

I have the same problem as the swedes, but I need a norwegian keyboard. Is there anywhere I can find it. The windows update don’t work.

Hi Ron,

It seems that your image had nlited out 16-bit support. I could not install MS Money99 on my AA1, which gives error message “The Win 16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode …”

I understand that you are working on a second version. Could you include 16-bit support on it.

Many thanks.

@Eivind

2) put “KBxxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

pls leave a message if this worked for you!

@Mick…very strange you can’t delete registry keys…were does it stop for you to do so?

@SP…16bits support is not yet to stay in next release…anyhow it is not sure I will release it the same way as this one for everyone. I’m thinking of a smaller group of users.

@ Kelly.

Same here Kelly. Fortunately it’s not needed here.
If you can find out what files TS relies on, you could attempt to fix by copying them over as we did with the RD earlier?
If I find anything I’ll let you know.

Sorry to double post.

@Kelly – can you try to copy the files already copied from a machine with SP3 on it if not already?
All the info I can find points to the problem being with SP3.

Thanks for this Ron. Just bought the 8GB AAO on Monday and couldn’t stand the linpus.

Had to do a bit of a workaround as i only had a 256mb usb stick and a 160GB USB HDD available.

With the freedos installed on the usb stick, and the ghost image on the HDD, it worked fine with just substituting D: (the USB HDD) for c: (The USB Stick) in the instructions.

You da man Ron!!

Hi Ron! Thanks for a great work, could you give me a fix for finnish keyboard please?

Hello Ron! First of all I want to thank you for the great image!

I have almost everything working just fine. My only problem is the USB modem, a ZTE MF620, which after installing the software, gives me an error “Exception in module DLL_NETCARD_R.DLL at 00044DF3″. I’ve updated the firmware, but didn’t solved the problem. I googled it but nothing either. It works fine on other computers with XP and Vista. The problem could be related with the “phone and modem” components removal?

Please could you give some help? Thanks.

just bought my aspire one SSD 8GB..help me………
i need XP on it…..:(
is there any trouble between tiny XP and nokia pc suite???

@ron i’ll try it tonight…god bless me….. please…

@SergioR & leon….I’m not familiar with that 3rd parties software…although I know that Nokia Suite have/had prolems with SP3 in XP. USB modem should work…the problem is in the software try to google for a DLL fix or a forum for the ZTE modem. Sorry I don’t have the hardware to help you in this.

Thanks for your the fix for the norwegian keyboard. It worked as you described it. In fact I tried to rename the no_keyboard file to th US_keyboardfile before I got your proposal and that also worked ok, but I think your way is better

i’ve already download the file from the rapid share (5part)
its succesful to unrar the file
but when itried to instal in to my AAO its hang on this step… :(

next screen choose option 1:Install to harddisk using FreeDOS SETUP (default).

there are no choose option..

the screen just show FreeDOS en blinking cursor

oo… there are message such as:
“MEMDISK: Image seems to have fractional end cylinder” is it error message??

ron can u help me…….:(

Hi Ron,

I have a problem on the power tray icon which always shows it’s on AC power even if it’s on battery alone.

I don’t know if it’s just my AA1 or does others have the same problem. I tried the method as posted on the AA1 user forum of copying batt.dll to windows system32 folder but it does not work for me.

Any suggestion on how to solved this problem since it is not very practical not knowing how much charge is left on the battery.

Thanks again for your great work.

@Leon….I think you don’t do the steps as written…Did you make the Freedos Stick WITH Internet connection? Freedos need files from Internet. If so, did you go after booting to the right folder c: or D: where ghost.exe is? the start ghost.

@SP….read post above…I posted the file as well with an instruction….putting the dll in system32 is not enough…you have to reinstall the driver after that (easy…its the dll what is copied)…then it must work…It sounds like you did copy butt didnt reinstall it……download the file and follow theinstruction :-) ….should work for you.

Hi everyone. Ron, thanks for this ghost image. I am a very happy linux user. But for work, I am stuck with XP. I will try to install your TinyXP and then double boot with Linpus Linux. I have 8GB SSD and 8GB SDHC. Hope it will be enough room to store both systems!. Anyone has done it? Thanks in advance.

thx, great work mate…but could you please make an italian language keyboard layout file? thank you!!

I think you don’t do the steps as written…Did you make the Freedos Stick WITH Internet connection? Freedos need files from Internet.
====
yes i made freedos stick with internet conection

If so, did you go after booting to the right folder c: or D: where ghost.exe is? the start ghost.
i dont get this one… did u mean booting at AAO after instalation?? btw i never finished instalation at AAO its stuck on that point (14)
i put ghost.exe at USB stick…

i think get the problem….
when i made the freedos stik..it download from internet such file..i think it never finish at all, but unet bootin said it already done..how come??
i tried many time its just the same result, is there any problem with the site???

even i tried DL the latest unetbootin (299), its just the same..failure…

heheheh actually…..:p
when i made freedos, the DL process was interrupted in the middle off procces by my INTERNET ACCELERATOR…ugh…

now instalation tiny xp is under processs

ohh god help me….

i made it ron!!!!!!
thanx alot!!!

now i am going to explore it…

wow, finally i had nokia PC suit on my AAO..works fine..connect to the internet as easy as one click only….:D

Thanks Ron,

Find out the source of the problem of the battery icon. It is related to the program “a1ctl” patching the ACPIEC. After performing the unpatching, the battery icon reappears.

Hope this will be helpful to others having the same problem.

Hi…I have an spanish keyboard, I see no way to change to spanish. Any clue? Any one please? I have googled a lot and trying but have no solution yet.

This TinyXP Version is great for my asus aspire one, but I have encountered a problem and I do hope you can help me.

I am using a Huawei E220 USB Modem for 3G / HSDPA Connection and installed it’s Connection Manager Software. When I try to launch the program, nothing happens. I can’t even trace the specific logs on the Event Viewer for this problem.

I am sure that it’s not a problem with the modem since I use it on another laptop and its not a problem with the Acer Aspire since I used the modem successfully when I installed a full WinXP Prof on it.

Hi Ron,
you really made a good job! I downloaded the iso image for Italian language from Microsoft website, could you please provide me with the autorun file for the Italian keyboard layout?

This is my e-mail address: diehard_74@hotmail.com

Cheers,
Marco

@Leon & SP….thanks for u contribution :-)

@Cakkes….sorry don’t have/use usb modems..cant support you on this one.

@Markusss & Asphixmx

@cakkes wow…did you mean asus aspire one or what…?:)

@ron thanx…really great job, this tiny XP even better than my XP home at my asus notebook..,nokia pc suite run perfect on this tiny xp…..
did u still work on os X for AAO?? cant wait it…hihii

Besides my keyboard problem (there is no spanish set on the keyboard layout, only english), I downloaded windows live messenger, and cant be installed :( because of an error the messenger installer says.

Oh sorry for the typo I meant Acer Aspire One … Anyways I’ve been looking at other sites for the resolution for my 3G / HSDPA problem and saw this comment.

Your nlite build must include modem support. If you followed the guide at http://www.i64x.com/eeexp.php, he takes it out (you can take out modem drivers).

Can you help me to enable modem support for this tinyxp. Thanks.

@Ashinix…the given links to the Spanish Layout should work…if not you did something wrong….you copied file to right place?…you installed reg settings?….you changed language settings in keyboard settings?….one of these steps you must have done wrong.

And about messenger…there is already enough said about it..DL the standalone MSN messenger installer…and look at the forum aspireonuser.com…others who solved this.

@Leon..for the record: This is not my blog!..It’s from 2ManyDjs and he was working on OS X. :-)

Well there has been some progress on OS X: the audio is fully functional and the card reader can read standard SD cards! All in all both on OS X and Linux it has been a quite and I haven’t seen an opportunity to write on something interesting.

BTW, I don’t really see it as “my” blog. Anybody who is interested to write something can! See above “Want to write?” for more information.

@Matthew…
You asked on the forum if its possible to enable the Balloon Tips in this TinyXP version….YES IT IS.

I wrote a smale file to edit your registry for it (I didnt test it though because I dont use this image at the time).

1) Download file: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YWLKXVN2
2) Double click the file, OK to change registry
3) Reboot
4) Voila!

Pls left message if this reg file did the job so I dont have to test it myself anymore.

Well, what can I say, just quite outstanding package.

Installed it on my AAO, on which I just upgraded two 1,5Gb, and it works like a charm.

I added VLC and tried som media. I feel DVD iso files play OK, normal DivX also. But 720p mkv files seams to be to rich for it. But I guess that is to be expected.

In Firefox I completely removed any history saving, and also unchecked the “Check my spelling as i type” checkbox in the advanced tab, thought that might give more trouble then it helps.

Tried to install Chrome Browser just to test. Not sure yet how it stands up though.

Once again, thanks a million billion for this, and for your outstanding support here.

Looking forward to your next XP image. :-)

/MrStarhouse

hi ron…
can i upgrade firefox to the latest version???
any one experience with this???any trouble??

@Leon…..yes no problems, but the last time I tried the Windows Update add on didnt work well….but I guess that is solved by FireFox by now

thank you ron

Sorry for the English. Your excellent work, CONGRATULATIONS. I need Remote Desktop windows How can I install it?. Thank you.

OH. MY. GOD!

After wasting way too much time trying to figure out and customize Linux, this is an answer to my prayers!

Ron, you are seriously amazing, and THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES!!

already upgrade my firefox to 3.04 ver. hihihi its run perfect

@ Aldope….read the posts of Mick.

Hi Ron,

I’ve had your tinyXP installed for over a month and think its great!!

This may seem silly, but I haven’t been able to change desktop background images. All I can get to work is the field image you included, and the patterns and solid colors. None of my own images.

Any ideas as to how to make them work?

Thanks!!

@Jon…there is being talked about this on aspireoneuser.com

Can install a new theme…or if its only the image….make an image of 1024×600 pixels and call it bliss.jpg…..and overwrite the bliss.jpg file on your SSD (bliss.jpg is your current background.

@Ron[nl]
Thank you for the messenger tip & the spanish keyboard reg file. They are working now! Now I have a problem with outlook; it can’t find the pop, either the smtp servers. Maybe because I am in a starbucks now…Don’t know. I’ll try again when I get home. Thanks again for your help!

Thanks a million Ron! Appreciate your tinyXP and you timely answering all the questions here!!!

Hi Ron,

I noticed that you are working on a new project (PerformanceXP on SSD). Does this mean that you dropped the last project of v2 (vista look-a-like)? Or is it still the same one?
If it is a new one, how is this one going to be?

Thanks for all your help so far!

@asphixmx,

had the same problem with Outlook (and Outlook Express).
Didn’t work with pop server (but smtp server OK!)
Moved over to Thunderbird without problem

Forgot to say that Outlook and Outlook Express worked with “Fatty” XP!

Ron thank you very much for bringing this post, you’ve solved a lot of people install the windows directly from USB. A big hug from Argentina.

@Knoten
I uninstalled the bundled Office2003 and then reinstalled from my cd. The problem is still there. Can’t send or receive mails in outlook. POP&SMTP doesn’t work. I haven’t found a solution yet. Yes maybe I can try the tunderbird as you did, but I need the outlook because of my work :( If I found a solution of the outlook issue, I’ll post it.

Thanks a lot Ron and 2manydjs

Installed without any problem, and runs faster than linpus i think. However, i cannot find a german keyboard setup in the comments here, only swiss german, would it be possible to get the pure german too?

Jonas

@Lili…it’s all in the same…at least I’ll try to keeep speed good enough….I left TinyXP as base and am testing with an other basis of a XP version. (btw keyboard layouts included:-)).

@Polsa…pure German is coming up…will make it now.

@Knoten and asphimix….you looked in the services?…I remember the (windows) services could be disabled.

GERMAN (standard) KEYBOARD LAY-OUT

1) download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=THBOV3XZ
2) put “KBxxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

pls leave a message if this worked for you!

Other than having to change the regional settings to US this has worked so incredibly well. After trying to install a full version of XP, this is night and day! Thank you for all of your hard(and uncompensated) work Ron, by far the easiest way I have found to get TinyXP up and running and kicking ass!

Thanks Ron for the finnish keyboard, works great, Btw have you tried MicroXP (0.83) image by eXPerience? Works great and seems even faster than your tiny image. Have you thought about basing your next image to that one?

Yes I tried MicroXP….works fine but has even less services than this one, which makes already some problems for users. So no I wont use that one.

Yeah Jukeboxhero…my region is Dutch:-)

Hello,

I just installed this TinyXp version in my Aspire One. It seemed great. I then downloaded Avast from my desktop and transfered it to my Aspire without ever connected to the internet. At the first scheduled scan Avast detected two infected dll’s with Trojan. I found one of them on a Nederlands forum. Anyone expirienced something similar? Any explanations?

Thankyou Ron
System works great.
I used a 16gb fat32 usb, no problems.
Also try driver genius, if your drivers don´t work
Dankya vell ( only dutch I know )

@vvvv…nor Kingston Internet Security, Eset’s NOD32 found a virus. And sometimes scanners see unknown dll’s as a virus…what dll’s Avast see as an infected one?

Dankya vell=Dank je wel

[...] you’ve installed TinyXP you might be interested in installing the following additional [...]

Thanks Ron.

It was ..system32/efcbqpnn.dll , and tuvVNHwV.dll

but also Dc1.exe in C:Recycled\Dc1.exe\$INSTDIR\is169740.exe
although as I mentioned Avast it was the first thing I ve installed..

GREAT!!! I was literally trying to sell my AAO when i decided to give it a last shot with XP and found this release.

easy to install and works great!!

Thank you so much!!

Greetings from Lisbon.

PS: Please mind the gap -> AAO is in fact a NETBOOK.
Running adobe photoshop CS4 on a netbook… is really beeing optimistic :)

PS2: I know this is big trouble for you Ron and probably our “minor” individual problems gives you a lot of trouble and makes you spend lots of time but PLEASE we want 2nd version :)

sorry forgot something i didnt found kingston internet security, what i found and installed was kingsoft internet security. is it the same you’ve recommended?

cheers

lecker! :)

Excellent! This works very well on my AAO. Now to work on a dual-boot solution.. :P

@vvvv..tuvVNHwV.dll is a part of the fancontrol solution.and the others I don’t really know…but I can imagine it belongs to this as well……fancontrol exists from to parts of software…..the first part (also the dll i mentioned) is software from taiwan what is needed to talk with the controllers and sensors on the motherboard. This piece of software has no signatures and can be seen as a virus.

@Macielle…yeah you’re spot on….Kingston=Kingsoft. On the new version I use Eset NOD32 what looks also very promising.

Hello Ron,

I ve noticed that there was one more suspected file, TVicPort.dll and I ve found out that it was part of the fancontrol.
I uninstalled fancontrol and tvciport and installed it again (the newer version). There is no trace of tuvVNHwV.dll.
Can you check at somepoint at a clean installation and see what is going on?
Thanks a lot.

Despite that, it is a great work! well done.

Hi Ron!

Thumbs up for you from Italy! I was desperately trying to have XP decently running on my AAO and found your Post.

Your “distribution” is incredibly fast and well done!

A couple of questions: do you have any advise about which Internet suite to install on AAO?

Should we disable prefetch as advised by other users?

Ciao Enrico. :-)

@vvvv…no I’m not reinstalling this version….It worked fine for me with no suspected files….plus I didnt find any suspected action when it was installed either. Plus I’m working on a different XP installed base now.

@Enrico…yeah prefetch disabled would be fine (although I did enabled it….hmmmmm strange)..can’t check it anymore…maybe you can check and make (if you know how) a reg file for ppl here to do the same :)

Hi Ron,

What is prefecth, and how can I disable it? Will it improve my speed? My bf has recently upgraded my laptop, to 1.5 ram. But I didnt notice a lot of speed improvement, so any extra tip for improvement would be GR8!!

Thanks

Lily

Hi Ron,

thx for your prompt reply.

I have checked the Registry and found no entry named ‘EnablePrefetcher” in the “Prefetchparameters” folder so I guess you have already disabled it.

Re Internet suite: I have found a post written by you re Kingsoft Security. You recommended it as your choice. Can you confirm it is still your favourite.

As you may see you are my GURU now!

Thanks and greetings from Italy,
Enrico. :-)

Did someone got msn live to work? i still get same error when i try to run the one i’ve downloaded from msn website.

i even try to use and old version i got from oldversion.com but then tells me to update to new version and same error… :(

@Lily prefetch is already disabled as Enrico mentioned.

@Enrico…thanks for checking….Kingsoft is very good and free for 180days:)…it doesnt slow your system down to much. At this moment on a new install I’m trying Esets NOD32 and looks very promising as well. Which of both is best…well about the same I would say.

@Macielle…just disale the automatic update of MSN ;-)

i cant i suppose. because it says: “a new version is available, you must install new version in order to continue. would you like to do this now?”

and if i choose no, i wont connect, if i say yes it downloads new version and i get same error. Any luck with msn guys?

German Keyboard seems to work perfectly.

MSN works without any problems to me, i did as you said that you already tried, installed an old version (7.5 i think) and it updated itself without any problems.

Got it :)

for those with problems getting MSN Live Messenger running:
ERROR i got was: 0×80070714

1 – Open firefox and google for: windows update firefox addon

2 – Install Windows Update Firefox Addon and restart Firefox.

3 – Go to Tools on firefox and clink on WindowsUpdate shortcut

4 – Firefox automatically Opens IE and and windows update installs something. You’ll be asked to reboot. Reboot.

5 – Go to http://www.oldversion.com and download MSN version 7.5 -> Install MSN 7.5, when you try to login press yes on update to new version.

6- MSN Live will be working :)

Thanks RON for this AMAZING release! ITS GREAT!

Hi Ron,

I’m currently testing as you suggested KingSoft Internet Suite 9 and I’m really satisfied! Fast and lot of nice features.

Just FYI I have used NOD32 Internet Suite for a short time on my Dell laptop and really I didn’t like it very much. It seemed to me that the firewall was not configurable at all and the Spam filter did slow down the machine a lot…

This post is mainly to thank you very much for your excellent job and fast communication! You saved me for months of “tweaking” and “trial and error”.

Keep up your good job and take care!
Enrico.

@Enrico….NOD32 (not sure yet) has something odd going on…now and then it seems my connection to my router is timed out…need double click the link again OR click on the NOD32 logo in the taskbar to reconnect….weird…you had same?…if not I can skip the idea NOD32 has something to do with this.

BTW if you delete al reg keys/folders of kingsoft after 18 days you can use the trial again ;-)

I, i’m very interested in your portage project for the aspire one, i’ve got an A110 successfully installed with you disk image , but for Xmas i would offer it my child of ten , wo only speak french, so is ther any solution to tranform the whole image in a french one, if there is one or other solution please answer me,

Merry Xmas to all

@Bill…sorry can’t help you with that…is simply not possible to my knowledge. You need a French version of XP and install it yourself…with NLited you can strip it down ;-)

Ron,

this is absolutely golden. I’ve tried so many OSes to make my AA1 behave as I wish, from linpus to ubuntu to puppy linux. I do have one question though, I seem to be having problems getting onto a WPA Enterprise network, is there an easy fix for this?

hi ron..
mine is AAO 8GB..i want to know what is the maximum capasity of the SD expansion slot??? one said 8GB is it true???
(sad mode on)

Another happy Acer One user, tks to you !!!

Although my wireless drops signal easily, and lack of anti-virus~~~

wireless problem fixed, tks above post.

chinese font installed, tks google…

I am a happy AO User now!!!

@leon
I’m running here with a 16 gig card, in the acer one.
(adata sdhc 16gb.)

Maybe that is the limit? I don’t know…

Hi Ron

I have a question, I installed this OS, but i have 2 problems.

1 i cant use internet explorer for the windows updates, do you have a answer??

2 My wifi doesnt work, it wont see any wifi channel?? dont know why, but it is not working, i tried everything.

I have the a 110ab, with 1,5 ram.

Can you help a fellow dutchmen?? :)

Thanks

@jip,

i had same problem with the wifi… do this, go to system and remove (hardware) the atheros wlan, then just press (or reboot) to search for new hardware, it will install atheros wlan again and it will be 100%. :)
oh and check if its “on” ;) *you have a little switch on the right side of the AAO.

wow!, tnx men this works great, i instaled it on a hdd AAO with no problems

hi alljunks, how did you get the chineses font fixed? i can’t read the chinese words in web with chinese characters…

@dribibu..
did you put it on expansion slot or on the card reader???

Installed successfully .thank you

So back in business…let’s see:

@Ali..There are no restriction in the WiFi use, so should be working…if WPA enterprise doesn’t work for you (choose in networking->wirless->tab “wireless networks”) look for an updated driver which support wpa enterprise better. But XP should do that natively.

@Leon…The left cardreader support SDHC cards….these cards can go up to 32GB (their maximum size) The right slot only supports SD cards (isn’t their max capacity not 2GB?).
The left slot should also be able to read 32 GB SDHC cards. Watch with SDHC cards that the Class 2,4 & 6 of these cards the write and read speed define. The higher the class the speedier the card.

@Jip…wireless driver works fine…stupid question maybe…you enabled your wifi card? Is there an orange led blinking on the right?….or is the SSID not broadcasting/hidden of the network you try to connect to? If on all answers NO then simply reinstall the WIFI driver! as Maciella explained
Link driver: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_150.html XP drivers 150 = 110

hi ron! thank you for this! i have just installed it and its working perfectly and so are the programs that i have installed (yahoo msnger, itunes, bitcomet, etc..) but i have a problem on a particular program that i installed, the saunders comprehensive review for nclex-rn. when i click it, an hourglass icon appears but then nothing happens. its working fine on my desktop (xp) and my other laptops (vista) except for my aao installed with your software. i would just like to ask if there may be compatibility issues with other programs such as this and if there’s some way to fix it. thanks.

@Irvcens…sorry I dont know the software..just looked on Internet for it…..maybe…maybe…it needs Adobe PDF reader (see the install requirements of this software) and the image I used Foxit as pdf reader.

But further I cant help you on this issue,

hi Ron,

thanks to you now my little one is running on xp!!! have been playing around with it, so far it’s great! one small problem i’m experiencing, can’t read chinese character on some web page, how can i solve it?

thanks in advance!!

@NK…you ppl ask me more and more difficult questions huh?..but ok I supose you need Chineese support for your browser…This is what I come up with….uninstall current FireFox (start->control panel->add/remove software->uninstall FireFox)

Then go here http://www.cnbeta.com/articles/70067.htm
to download the Chinese version of FireFox and install that one…This will help you to read Chinese websites better I think.

Let us know if this worked x
D

thanks ron! will try this one out.. I have read that WinXP runs super slow on aao ssd, due to the ssd’s poor write function… Will this tinyXP image be fast and not sluggish as others have experienced? Thanks!!

Hello Ron,

I just wanted to know the progress on your second release :)

Thanks,

Lily

Hey Ron, wonderfull job btw, congrats.

I’d like to ask you if your software will run better/faster than full SP3 XP, on a AAO 150 HDD version.

Please let me know, thx in advance.

would just like to ask if the expansion card slot on the left will still work if I install XP on this? or will it just act like a card reader/writer and not integrating the space to the overall available space of the aao.

thanks!

Thanks Ron!! will try out….

@Lily…..still working on it although not as much as I want..so takes longer..I am vey occupied with new phone :) ..SE xperia x1

@John…I didnt see it working on a 150 myself, but the signals from users who has this on their 150 are telling us it is faster than the regular install…BTW this install has SP3 as well. You can make an image from your current install (with programs included in download) and test yourself to let other users know if it can be intersting or not on a 150.

@Rom….double boot? or just install on the card reader and boot xp from it?…the later is not possible….the bios cannot boot from the sdhc reader. But if you install a small piece of “booting software” on your HDD/SSD it is possible (after some changes in the boot “software” to make your sdhc reader bootable. But back to your 1st question this XP version runs quite fast on the ssd and is not needed to run from a class 6 sdhc card. Read all posts above and see the happy comments of all the ssd users like myself.

thanks ron! :)

In Linpus, when I insert an sdhc card, the aao integrates the 4gb sdhc automatically and natively into the aao total storage space as opposed to using the card reader/writer on the right port, which would show up as an external memory.

my question is this, in XP, would the aao integrate the storage space of the sdhc card into the OS’s? Hope i explained it clearly :) thanks!

First of all: thanks for you great job.

I have used belarc software to check if XP is updated. The output told me that there are several important and critical patches to install.

question n1) is the result just a “false positive” due to the trimmed version of xp ?

question n2) is there any functional alternative to windows update (I am blocked by the WGA control).

Thanks again
Mauro

@Rom…I understand your queston…window xp does not natively add your sdhc card as HHD space. But there is a way to make this happen anyway…you need a hitachi(?) driver for the card reader..I saw a discussion on http://www.aspireoneuser.com about that a few months ago. Myself didnt tested this yet.

@ Mauro….this image was updated till october ‘08 or so…sure new patches are available. It should have passed WGA, but if you know which patches you need/want (they have numbers like KBxxxxxxx etc) you can find them on other sites to download…just google…and install…..but now about the term “critical patches” what Microsoft usualy call them…in my humbled opinion it is far to overdone….if your system works well what the heck you need them…and with an anti vius/spam/spyware you are doing well. In matter of fact I almost ever update my windows when it works fine…only with new installs I take the latest SP available.

Why fix (read update) something what works fine?

So far my 50 cents on updates.;-)

Hi,
I am trying to install this version, but when ghost reaches ~4% it says “decompression error” and aborts. Any idea what went wrong?

Thanks,
K

I already successfully installed tinyxp on my aao ssd/1gb :) thank you ron for sharing this very useful compilation.

I’m fine with the sdhc card being an external memory, but the loud fan noise (which I did not have in Linpus) and hot temps on the wrist area is creeping me out!

nevertheless great stuff!

Hi ron

Great work.

Loved my “new” AA1

portuguese key working

IE7 portable working

everything working in this litle netbook, even better than limpus

thank you a lot.

hi again ron! here is the download link to the program that i am talking about:

http://www.mediafire.com/index.php

don’t worry its just a small file, about 13mb. i hope you can help me figure out what components i am missing in order to run this.

thanks.

ahh this looks very promising, but i have hit a problem, i have formatted my pen drive, put all the stuff on correctly, and then tried to boot with it, it comes up with the blue screen saying default, i press return and i get this come up “loading boot sector…… booting….
FreeDOS” and then nothing happens, no options or anything, i tried pressing return and 1 and things, but nothing happens. i have an acer aspire one, the hdd version, currently running linpus if that helps

@Alex…1) You need internet connection when you use the tool to format USB stick with FreeDos..it get the files from internet..it’s not in the tool itself…2)Your USB stick is formatted FAT and bootable?…you can google for the HP tool for that,

Great stuff Ron, I cannot believe just how quick this runs.
I would like to ask about your work with win7, are you waiting untill release or working on one of the other builds, such as PDC release? from what I understand win7 should run really well on netbooks.
Keep up the good work

Scottie

ahh yhh, i re-copied it all to my pen drive again! and it works!!! i have been trying to get this done for 3 days now, thank you soooo much!!! ahh this is wicked!!

thanks so much!!

Alex

hi ron!!!
can i have this tiny xp installed in regullar notebook??

@ Leon…I wouldn.t advise that because it’s based on the drivers for the AA1…If you have the drivers of your laptop at hand you could give it a try.

ohhh okay… luv this tiny xp..even better an faster than my xp home at asus notebook

Hi! When i suspend the AAO can i simply put it on my bag and carry it? Or will the fan start working?

I dont think the fan will work….ghe AA1 is sleeping -> no heat…and the fan almost doesnt work at all when on battery.

Leon just install on your Asus and start in safe mode the update drivers and you should be ok……the only but is the fancontrol…wonder if it works…let us know.

Hi Ron, just a question about the “PC cleaner” that is installed on your image.

I just noticed that its a very old version, is there any particular reason why you choose to install that version and not the recent version? Otherwise I will just upgrade to the new version.

Thanks

thank you Ron[nl]

just installed tinyxp on my aao 8g ssd, install was quick and it’s running perfectly, all the hardware works, the whole install including office takes only 1 gig, can you please advice re: how i can create partition on the 8g ssd

thanks again, great work

managed to partition the ssd using EASEUS Partition Manager 3.0 Home Edition

Hi Ron…One question (from Spain)….Is it possible to install your TinyXP version from a CD?..Is it possible to burn a CD with your version and to install it on my AAO?

Thank you!

Hey Ron!

Thanks a lot for this marvellous OS. I just installed it on my AAO110L with 512Mb RAM and it’s so much better than the fully updated Ubuntu 8.10 installation I had. Awesome!!

OT:
Oh, one more thing! I hope the Dutch speed-skaters have had a good build up to this season cause we Norwegians have a new kid in town…in case you were interested in sports that is… Dutch ppl are almost as mad drinkers as norwegians and one of the best parties I have ever been to was down-town Rotterdam after Spain-Norway (0-1) in Euro 2000. The city was mostly orange but we certainly made our efforts to add some red, white and blue with good help from the dutch! Greatest party ever!!!
:-D

Best regards,

HanDerre

@ Lily…the image is aging..so just upgade!

@Kaneu…Why would you want that…a 1 gig usb stick is only few euro. If and when you can make a bootable cd and can start ghost you can…the image is not bootable!

@HanDerre..will watch the new skating kid on the block! Party is always going on with soccer…we love it..:)

Thanks for the great guide (not to mention 300+ posts of patient support) Ron, set up first time in moments!! Soooo easy, thank you!!

This is awesome!! I almost lost faith with my AA1 after converting it XP which gives me like 3 minute boot up time. Going to give it a try and post my thoughts.

Hi Ron!

Fantastic work! Your rom and tutorial are really great!

Linux2Xp so easy!

I assume I can get back to Linpus Linux Lite with the dvd I got with the laptop right?

@Laurens…yep with that cd (+usbstick) you can restore to Linpus

Nvm I’m sure I can..
Xp is working sweet now but I enabled hibernation and restarted but still I cant choose it at the shutdown dialog.

@irvcens….I took notice of the link you provided and will (no promise) look at the software. I can not test it in the same setting as your AA1 because I don’t use this image anymore due to a new project (allthough I must say this is still one of the best versions I used so far ;-) ).

But maybe I will test it on my new private project to see what it needs.

Ron, thank U very much, it’s really great.

By the way, can U help with russian and ukrainian layouts?
Please)

And can I install IE7 (well i need it) for this set? should it work ok?)

@Alex…I will do both keyboard layouts today asap…..I will also give you a link to the portable IE7 which I’d uploaded for some other AA1 user. This is lighter on your OS.

IE7 portable: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=43IEW8SP

@ Thank you, IE is ok, waiting for layouts))

RUSSIAN & UKRAINIAN KEYBOARD LAY-OUT

1) download your language file from:

Russian: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MII2WOLC

Ukrainian: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JQXU9C7U

note: I didn’t had the windows reg codes for the Ukrainian keyboard Layout. I changed the Turkish Keyboard Layout registry settings to work with the Ukrainian Layout. Should work. Let me know it works otherwise I need to find the codes.

2) put “KBDxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

pls leave a message if this worked for you!

BTW you can install IE no problemo!

@Ron it has no icon “UA” but its Ukrainian, and it works that’s all I need. Thank U for the help)

Yeah the Icons are not there….but is not needed anyway ;-) …glad the “workaround on the Ukrainian lyout works…enjoy XP! BTW the Layout is the real Ukrainian Layout…only the reg settings are fixed.

Hi Ron,

How is it going with the version 2? Is it almost finished?

Have a nice Christmas and New Year.

Lily

I cant get the euro sign with the alt-gr key and 5 anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi, Ron. Great work I must say
But i found that there’s no sound alert on the windows live messenger… Anyone have this problem and any solution on that??

hi ron thx again for IE link….somehow i miss IE too…even that i already had firefox and opera on my AAO :)

What’s the progress on version 2 Ron?
I need to re-install windows on my AA1 cuz of some language problems so should i wait for the new one?

@Leon…post 333

@John and Lily…due to private issues the progress is (to) slow to wait for it. And a public release is planned yet. Although the basis is very stable and getting speedy enough so far.

@Stanley…That should be a Mssenger problem…look in its settings….and also look in sound settings in control panel.

@Laurens….google for the registry codes Euro sign for keyboaard layout.

I cant change the directory.. To C: where the ghost.exe file is.. Tried several other letters like b,d,f etc..

any help?

Hey john, does this also contain Greek version of XP?

oh lol another John, well i don’t know you should ask Ron about it.

@John & John…no its the US version

Hello all! Just stumbled across Ron’s TinyXP and this forum…am getting excited about giving it a go! One question tho; can the newest version be installed with bios v3114? There was a mention earlier that it was a problem…I hate to reflash the bios if I don;t need to.

I have a new AAO w/Linpus; 512MB and 16GB SSD.

Thanks

Hello Ron, thanks for sharing this wonderful stuff that you made n_n , iam really happy with it n_n , but there are still things that i want to clarify if you don’t mind n_n , first will visual studio and SQL would run in this setup ? i asked this question because when i tried to install AVG it said that “not supported windows version” so i just want to ask if those program stated above would be able to install. i cant install the programs yet because my friend is still borrowing the CD’s and i just want to know in advance if it will work in this OS that you modify .

thanks in advance n_n

@Gorgerax….well bios 3114 gave more ppl problems (black screen of dead) and had to do a reflash to get the AA1 back running….I had the same. Plus I still like 3109 more because of the better steps backlithing the LCD….Your RAM at 512MB could give you some small lags if and when you don’t watch what you’ll install in XP. Allthough enough ppl did run well with that amount of RAM……advice flash up or down your Bios -> 3114 is a pain in the ass.

@Ian….strange AVG isnt installing…saying wrong windows version indicates you have AVG for ie Vista and not XP sp3 (this TinyXP is with SP3 included!)?….Visual Studio most probably will work as SQL will to…but I read on the forum 1 persoon had problems installing framework 2.net.
But if you know how to use Visual Studio you will also be able to solve all issues you eventually meet in this install.

As general note: People do all kind of installs and uninstalls on this image. It will always modify your settings/registry or something. This can influence your next software install and if it works or not. So I can not always be sure why it works or not. Be aware of that. My experience with the AA1 is that you should not try (install/uninstall) applications on the AA1. Because the cleaning afterwards is tuff. Better test software on an other system and just install what you will use for some time.

Hi Ron, great image, been using it for a while now. I recently tried to install Civ IV and get an error saying the graphics engine failed to load when I run the program. I was expecting it to run amazingly fast but I thought it would at least run. Any ideas?

@jude….I don’t know why…all I know your game needs DirectX 9C and 128MB video RAM…the later is not there on the AA1 just 8mb…..I don’t know how Civ IV handled shared RAM for video?

And if you have only 512 Mb RAM (min. requirement game) I don’t think you have enough RAM for game and video to play.

But with that error message don’t you receive more info to get a clue what to look for?

Thank you so very muts, Ron! After a few days struggling with my Acer, trying everything to put XP on it, now I fixed it in thirty minutes. And… its walks as a little sun!
The only thing I cannot find is how I can let my Outlook get the post from the pop-server.
Thank you very much for this great post!

Hi Ron, you must be getting fed up answering all these questions from the clueless masses ie. me, but anyway as its nearly Christmas I’ll appeal to your xmas spirit…

I’ve installed the image and it works great. I only have 512mb ram so I’ve been using eboostr. Unfortunately it seems to crash a lot. I’ve heard that if you set your page file up to work from your SDHC card it is just the same as ebooster. Do you know if this is true? Can you think why I might be having problems with eboostr?

Oh and while I’m here, I see that you’ve set the hard drive to be fat32. I’ve heard that NTFS is better. Is there any reason you chose fat32 for the AA1.

Merry Xmas
Terence

@Rietje…..I didn’t test any pop3/smtp myself, but heard 1 other person who had the same problem. If and when you have office at hand I would suggest to uninstall current version and re install again…let us know it works.

@Terence…..hohohoho christmas…you don’t need ebooster or a SDHC card for that….page filing is disabled :-) …page filing = a restore point for the system….disabled because it takes to much space of the SSD, plus what is even worse it keeps writing to the SSD. To gain speed on a ssd version we want to write as less as possible to the SSD (writing speed slows the system down to much).

And because I want the writing as less as possible to the SSD I run on FAT32 instead of NTFS. NTFS is indeed better and more secure and stable because it has more writing circles of the data. But on the SSD we don’t want that huh?…so FAT32 is the best choice.

Well I’ll keep up with answering till I give notice of closing this thread for myself. Will be a week or 2 in front. But it is not that far yet :-)

Same problem as Rietje – Outlook not working. It was some time now but I think smtp was OK (sending mail), but pop3 failed (reading mail). Copied all account data from my desktop PC (with XP sp3) but same problem.
Thunderbird working without problem.

A Merry Christmas to Ron(nl) for the great work with Tiny XP.
And with the Swedish keyboard!!!

Yes it was you (Knoten) who I was reffering to xD.

Thanks so much!
I have only 512MB RAM but this flies along.
Cold start 20s
From Hibernate 12s
From Standby 5s

Applications start in next to no time – Word is open within a second! My Dell X1 doesn’t start Word that quickly.

Only problem I have had is that when trying to open a pdf file, it seems to try completing/repairing Foxit Reader. I just downloaded and installed version 3.0 and now its fine.

Noting that some people are having email problems, I can report that I have no problem using Outlook 2003 towards Exchange 2007 account.

What I want to do now is get the hibernate file written to SDHC disk instead of SSD. Not starting trying – I’ll report back if I have any luck.

Also, I think I’m going to try and move all Documents and Settings to the SDHC too, to speed things up a bit more hopefully, and more imprtantly, to preserve the SSD

Thanks again!!!

But there were one or two others also!
Me think!

Found them : Post 17 BFin and post 171 Wim.

I was thinking about using Wireshark Network Analyzer on my desktop to see what goes wrong with Outlook, but gave up because I have a network switch in my network that does not allow the desktop to see the traffic. Installed Thunderbird and it worked.

Seems it’s not possible to move hiberfil.sys to anything other the root directory of the c:\ drive.
That’s annoying because the writing of the 512MB is slow (and even worse for people with more memory)

Oh well, I’ll stick with Standby

Hi Santa, er I mean Ron,

Thanks for getting back to me, so just to be clear would you recommend not using ebooster and/or a pagefile set up on the sdhc card. Or is it ok as long as it’s not using the ssd?

I could do with the memory but I’m far too scared to install proper ram (after having watched a video to see how its done.)

@Terence…..I wouldn’t advice Pagefile…..if you like to have a “restore point”….make a own ghost image with the tools included in this download.

Ebooster on the other hand cold be great if you can use it for the programs you use intensive. I have no experience with Ebooster mijself though.

You can also take a look into the Hitachi drivers to make your (left) SDHC card reader sees your sdhc card as a harddrive and install your programs on there (including my documents etc). I will try this on my next install as well.

MERRY CHRISTMAS Y’ALL

elow ron n_n its me again n_n , i just want to ask some question about the services that you disabled… are you the one who actually remove the terminal services on the tiny XP rev 09 or does the tiny xp rev 09 already removed the terminal services? n_n coz debugging wont run with it disabled i tried to restore it using the sp2 build of my desktop and transfer the terminal services registry key and the dll files inside the system32 but it seems that i wont work the service wont start >_< maybe the registry entries are quite a bit different on the sp3 so i want to know if the tinyxp rev 09 does still have the terminal service so i could get the files there n_n thank you n_n

Thank You Very Mucho for your Work!! My AAO 512M RAM/ 8G SSD is working very well with your image. I change the kbdus.dll to kbdsp.dll for the spanish keyboard.

Greetings from Spain and Merry Cristmas to you!!

Manuel

Ron,

Thank you so much as such a champ XP which revive my AAO again.

Another myth happenned to my AAO:
Can not get my Wifi working properly, it’s working fine just first time re-installed driver, next XP start, it’s gone. Atheros Client utility seems like in loop of searching.

My one is AAO 110 (8GB SSD, 1GB RAM)

Merry Xmas – Happy New Year!

Ron,

My AA1 is running like a champ with your image! I appreciate all the work you put into making that happen for us frustrated Linux newbs! Everything works like a champ and I really didn’t notice any change in boot up times or restarts. Nothing to write about anyway. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Don Pedro

hi Ron, cant believe you make this for acer aspire ones now two lol also what is your main forum now for windows releases now appzpoint is dead.

just one question about this release will it work with the new 1gig ram 120gb HARD drive version that is out?

Well I am one happy dude today! Was loving my AAO with 512MB and 8GB SD but not too happy w/Linux as I was practically raised by Windows and so much seemed counter-inutuitive working in Linux! LOL

Took the plunge…completly backed up my factory install (for peace of mind) on a 4gb USB stick per Macles:e

http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/12/acer-aspire-one-aa1backup.html#comments

Installed Ron’s TinyXP per instructions here and couldn’t be happier! The performance is exceeding my expectations!!! I had already ordered another 1GB of ram (a whopping $9.99 outlay) so will go ahead with that install next week, but again…this is really snappy as is!

BTW…the ENTIRE install took less than 10 minutes and took only 1GB+/-!!! WAY less than the original Linux!!!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Ron!

So I used this tool, GREAT btw! But yea, i want to use NTFS format. For those who don’t know how. There’s a way to conver without formatting. I just converted now. It works fine.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881

Thank you for your time and effort, my AA1 is runnin´like a dream after installing your ghostimage. Everything works perfect. The swedish keyboard layout worked perfect aswell after installing the files you uploaded.

Ron!

Thanks, guy! (Dank je wel!) This works great, except…

Can’t seem to get Outlook to work, IMAP or POP. It says it’s “not correctly registered”. Any hints?

Nogmaals bedankt! :^)

Thanks all for your kind words:

- Ian…those service were already disabled from were I took over.

- Outlook….uninstall and install own copy of office to get outlook working..When no succes in these posts there is mentioned an other email client that do the work for you.

- It works on the 120/160 GB harddisk version out there…as long the hardware stays the same. |Otherwise you need to update drivers..a lot of people used this image with a harddrive already with success

Works like a charm, this AA1/110 is released from horrors of Linux for now. Linpus really sucked.
Thanks for a great distro.

Brilliant. It worked first time. I tried Linpus for a while, but couldn’t stand it.

Thank you!

thanks R.O.N and im guessing your on s.i.t.p website still

can you use imgburn or alike on this

What’s s.i.t.p?…….if and when IMGburn support your usb burner sure it should work > 95% of the software should work!

sharing is the point

I see “didn’t knew there is a website for that, I only share here. ;-)

Fantastic work Ron. Worked first time and was so fast on install. Was putting up with Linpus cos it basically did what I needed, but it did seem basic. Was holding off on installing XP because I liked the quick boot up times of Linpus. But this is amazig. So fast on boot up and runs like a dream.

Just wondering if there’s a version for the Eee? A friend has one and it’s even worse than the AAO was!

Brilliant job though! :)

By the way. I couldn’t get Outlook to work, and the utility there to pull in hotmail just made it completel crash, so uninstalled it and installed standalone Windows Mail Live and it works fab.

so your not the original r.o.n then or that person is not which one is it lol

sorry im confused now

@mark…..no i’m not r.o.n….but the image is mine “original”.

Hey Ron,
nice work i think i have tried almost every distro out there
yours is by far the best just have one tiny thing to ask can you provide the file for Belgian french keyboard files for a neighbor down south

Hi Ron
I posted this on the AAO forum, but I am sure the guys here will appreciate it too.

I am having problems with outlook too. I cannot send/receive internet email, and XP tell me I need to re-install.

I Uninstalled Office, ran PC Cleaner to try and make sure it was a clean un-install and then dl’d a portable copy of of Outlook, when I run this I get the same error.

I am stuck now.

Guy

sorry mate was confused what with you using the name lastxp still and RON as a name or return of the night as it stands for

did not mean offense

Hi Ron,

just wanted to know the progress on version 2. I didnt hear anything about it… are you still working on it?

Thanks,

Lily

@mark…no offence taken at all :-)

OUTLOOK……yep I hear more often about the problem of pop/smtp….just reinstall (not portable version)…I also read in the post an alternative for Outlook what works well with POP/SMTP…I cant recreate the problem….I’m running on a other version now (v2 Lily..lol)….but didnt do a lot to it last month due to private issues. It is a little less speedy though but also very nice running.:) But there is still a lot of support needed on this one too huh?

@jawzofthepit….

BELGIAN FRENCH KEYBOARD LAY-OUT

2) put “KBDxx.DLL” in C:\windows\system32\
3) double click xxxxxxxxLayout.reg -> OK (this put keyboard in registry)
4) now install/configure it using the “regional and language options.

Voila!

pls leave a message if this worked for you

Hi Ron,

I’m about to test your image, hope it is as fast as everybody says. Thanks for the effort!

My first intention was to install MicroXP, but i’ll try this first. Why did you not go for MicroXP instead of TinyXP?

Gr, Pieter

Ah, never mind the MicroXP comment. I failed to read all posts :)

MicroXP is less compatible with services and application than TinyXP

Getting slower and slower to boot…
Initially I could boot in about 20s with thisimage. I have made a few small additions of software:
- a bit torrent client
- a disk performance benchmark
- updated the pdf software to version 3 because of some problems with the default install

Now boot times are closer to 40 seconds! Is Windows really so poor at adding additional software that it can cause the boot time to degrade so dramatically? What generally causes this? Is it software installations switching on additional services that were not previously being run?? Anyway, I’m going to redo the image and leave everything alone for a few days.

I’d let it hibernate, but writing to flash is slow and so it takes 30 seconds to shutdown. Not a problem normally, but irritating if you realise you’d forgotten to do something and want to start the machine again.

I’d use standby, but it loses quite a lot of battery each day in standby. I have bought a 7200mAh battery, but it is so bulky that I can’t bring myself to attach it and spoil the beautiful lines of the aspire one.

Replying to my own post above, the boot time is still close to 35 seconds. Maybe I was a bit optimistic originally, but I’d have sworn that it booted in 20s first few times I tried it. What boot times are others getting?

Chris..Boot times are measured differently I’ve noticed…ppl start counting from cold start (pushing button)…think 35 secs are then ok….start counting from when windows start after boot system…20 secs are ok.

In general I ask myself why ppl taking 10 secs of booting time as important….Why?….you dont boot every 15 minutes do you?…booting times taking minutes are not ok though.

Happy New Year!

Ron[nl]

Just a further note to my post earlier. Windows Mail was working fine. Iinstalled Kingston Internet 9 and ran the scans and let it do the various updates, such as security ones to Office. It found a virus in C:\Program Files\UninstallTool\UninstallTool 1.6.6.exe which it cleaned.

Now Windows Mail Won’t work. It goes to sign in then just crashes asking to send an error report.

Thought I’d mention it. I’ll try reinstalling Outlook and see if that will work :)

Ron
You’re right that such low boot times aren’t “needed”, but they help.
I use this more as a PDA than as a PC, so power off/on quite a lot to maintain battery through the day. I’ll just have to train myself to use standby and keep plugged in to the mains whenever I can.
Thanks again for a great image.

Is there anyway to get Windows update working? Do I need to install some service?

Hi,

I can’t get updates to work thru Windows update but I’d like to share this info with everyone. You can get updates thru different ways:

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/11/25/3-alternative-ways-to-get-windows-updates/

Many thanks for the Swedish keyboard layout-patch-thingy, lacking Swedish keyboard support nearly drove me crazy before i read all the comments here. :)

YOU SAVE MY NETBOOK!!!!.

At last I can use win XP, after test a lot of tutos to create a win xp boot usb stick, but it never works.

Thanks a lot.

A happy Acer Aspire One 8gb with XP :)

is it possible to install IIS over this image? i love how the image works but i need IIS for my work.

TX.

Did not try Internet Information Server on this image. Just try and maybe, I repeat maybe, you need to enable some services on top of that.

Hi,

I sold my Aspire one, after the mem upgrade to 1,5 gig the sdd disk was still to slow. Ron your windows version was the best i tried but the 8sdd was just to slow to work fast. I bought the asus 1000h with 160 gig harddisk with xp, and its fast :) .

But thanks for all your effort for all the other users.

Hey, I have found a work around for those having problems with outlook, just using Thunderbird and Lightening. A great software package!

I use my netbook now as if I had a fancy M$ Exxhange server, with “over the air” connection to my PDA and everything…

It requires a couple of tricks, checkout http://sleepywhisper.com/?p=188

Guy

hi ron

i have now upgrade to your xp great work

one thing can not seem to get any windows updates

Ron, another question.
I have problems with my webcam.
It doesn’t appear to be working correctly, I think that after a restart the cam works – but by the time I have been up and running for a while opening skype and other apps that could use the cam.. and then when the driver software doesn’t find the camera, and skype doesn’t find the camera…

any ideas?

Guy
http://sleepywhisper.com

hi, i have problem with copying files larger than 4gb using fat32 can i partition using ntfs and ghost this image over ?

Fantastic work Ron
ur image worked gr8 4 me :)
only one question:
How could i add the arabic keyboard layout?

another happy AA1 user :)

@Dav…read the posts (397 by Jere) and find an answer to your question.

@Guy…webcam worked for me well, I don’t use skype though..the drivers are from october last year…maybe you should update the webcam driver with the latest to get it working with skype (most probably new version huh?)

@Handsome…no I’m afraid that will not be possible….but do you have a sd card bigger than 4gb? format that one in ntsf to copy or use a usb HDD.

@Mohamed…You can added like others as I gave files for in this Blog…I dont have the right regestry keys…but I can make one up for you…but I need to know which Arabic (english 101, French 102 or Arabic 2) layout you need. If I know I’ll make you something like other language files I’ve made earlier.

Hi,
Great job there with tiny XP…
Ron, I have few quesions about Your version of system…

*Is there any way to add polish programmers keyboard layout?
*Can I install it on my AAO ZG5 with polish XP preinstalled?
*Can I install any devices (printer, 3G modem, connect camera, external USB CD or HDD) without problems?

cheers

thx Ron
i need the arabic 101 keyboard layout (english 101)

[...] that M$ (Microsoft) Windows was the best option.  I am running Tinyxp as prepared by ron[nl] here. Like with Windows Mobile on my cellphone I love the hacked/customised feel Windows XP has these [...]

hi ron…..i am planning to add 3g/hsdpa modem…is there any problem with may AAO with tiny xp?? can u recomended me what the brand name of the modem that compatible with my AAO 8gb

thx

hi, thanks for this i now have xp running really fast on my aspire, but im trying to install nokia music and when doing so it tells me i need BITS service, which after abit of research i think is removed to make tinyXP, is this so? or whats the next step in getting this? will i have to do a full install?

Thanks

Hello Ron.

I have a A110L with the standard Linux. Can I use this Ghost Image? I think the Linux Distribution have more than one partition on my ssd. Is this a problem? Windows is only on one partition.

Thanks.

@ Mariusz & Leon…..3g modems without good drivers will give problems like many on aspireoneuser.com mentioned (with or without this image).

Mariusz a polish programmer keyboard needs the correct keyboard DLL in system32 and some registry keys to make the dll visible tio choose. And yes devices should work.

@Moates….in this blog or on aspireoneuser.com someone else had the same problem and (I remember) wrote down the solution.

@Earnie…When you put ghost image on your system it will become one partition.

@Mohamed
